6th Grade Field Day was held on October 5th 2011 at the Mills County Civic Center.  Students from Goldthwaite, Mullin, Priddy, and New Horizon's attended.  The day started out with students dividing into four groups and rotating to different stops.  Students learned about leadership skills and public speaking from the local FFA students.  Tommy Head taught the groups how to identify grass and the importance of maintaining a good grass cover on rangeland.  Goldthwaite FFA student demonstrated how to show a calf at the livestock show and talked about the feeding and preparation for the show.  Tom Guthrie, Mills County AgriLife Extension Agent, and James Schunke, local rancher,  gave students information on raising Angora goats and their place in everyday life. 

After a short break, all the students gathered in one group as the Comanche County Electric Coop gave a live demonstration on electricity and how to be safe around power lines.   

The students then reassembled into the four groups so they could tour the second group of stops.  The kids learned about water conservation in Texas given by Mary Jo Schooler, Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board.  Dale Partin, local farrier, gave a demonstration on horse shoeing.  James Schunke talked about sheep and their importance in agriculture.  David West, representative from Lawson Implement Company, talked about lawn mower safety.

Don Barnett gave the invocation for lunch.  The Mills County Soil and Water Conservation District provided a hamburger lunch for all the participants.  Don Brandenberger cooked the hamburgers on a bar-be-que pit.  Anita Hopper, Wynonna Head, Lynetta Barnett, Irene Ezell, Bess Wilcox and Alma Priddy helped serve the lunch.  The students commented on how well the lunch tasted.

After lunch David West provided the students with a live demonstration on bow hunting. He talked about the safety aspects involved in bow hunting. He popped a balloon with an arrow from about 30 to 40 feet. He also shot an apple, a lime and a lifesaver candy. The students really enjoyed the demonstration.

The last demonstration of the day was given by Tom Guthrie and Hoffpauer Polaris. They talked and demonstrated on ATV Safety.

W.J. Hopper gave a brief summary and thanked everyone for their participation in the field day.

The students were dismissed at 2:15 p.m. and returned to their schools.

The field day was attended by about 45 students and 30 adults. The Mills County Farm Bureau gave a $100 donation.
